This is my second beer here at Blackstone Restaurant & Brewery. I started with the American Pale Ale, which wasn’t as hoppy as I had hoped, but it went pretty good with my burger. Fortunately, I don’t have to travel again until tomorrow, so I stuck around for second beer. Their porter was recommended to me by a friend on Twitter, but I had a craving for hops, and this seemed to be the best option after the American Pale Ale I had just had.
Numbers: ~5% ABV
Appearance & Aroma: The beer was very clear and was amber colored with a bit of a reddish tint. There was a lot of carbonation in it, leaving a decent sized creamy, cream-colored head on it, which left some nice lacing on the glass. There was a mostly malty aroma with a hint of earthy hops.
Taste & Feel: The big head gave it a creamy mouthfeel, which revealed a solidly medium body. There was a good malty flavor, but it was more of a dull bready malt flavor rather than sweet and caramelly. it finished with a nice earthy English hop flavor that lasted for a bit into the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This is definitely the type of beer that would go nicely with fish and chips. The bready malt flavors would go along with the breaded fish, and the earthy hop flavors would add a nice complexity to the flavors.
Overall Impression: It was a nice afternoon to sit at the bar, enjoy a beer and watch them brewing in the brewhouse. After my meal, this was a nice beer to sip on and relax after an already crazy week of traveling. I enjoyed the bready maltiness, but wish there would have been a little more of a hint of caramel flavor. I really liked the earthy hop flavor in the finish and how it lasted into the aftertaste. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good beer, although I think they’re Dry Hopped Red is still my favorite from this establishment.
