I asked for a non-chilled mug and poured my beer into the mug, that way I could see what I was drinking – unlike the Goose Island IPA I had last week here at O’Hare.
It poured a very cloudy amber color, and the head disappeared very quickly. It had a good sweet malty/caramel smell to it with some faint hops noticeable.
The taste was a sweet maltiness with caramelly notes. The English hops were noticeable and the finish was a bit dry. Despite asking for a non-chilled mug, the beer was pretty cold in the bottle, and it was a little too cold for me to pick up much more from the beer.
Overall, I thought it had a pretty good English bitter flavor, true to the style. It was very crisp and refreshing, and would be a great beer for sipping on a fall afternoon. It went very well with my mushroom and swiss burger, but I think it would also go very well with BBQ chicken. Since this is a home-state beer (Illinois), I think this might be a fun one to introduce friends to, in order to get them to experiment with different styles.
