I’m back at O’Hare today, so I thought I’d go for another Goose Island beer, this time the Honker’s Ale. The bottle says, “Inspired by visits to English country pubs, Honkers Ale is the perfect blend of hops and malt. A smooth, drinkable English-style Bitter for drinkers who want more from their beer.”
I asked for a non-chilled mug and poured my beer into the mug, that way I could see what I was drinking – unlike the Goose Island IPA I had last week here at O’Hare.
It poured a very cloudy amber color, and the head disappeared very quickly. It had a good sweet malty/caramel smell to it with some faint hops noticeable.
The taste was a sweet maltiness with caramelly notes. The English hops were noticeable and the finish was a bit dry. Despite asking for a non-chilled mug, the beer was pretty cold in the bottle, and it was a little too cold for me to pick up much more from the beer.
Overall, I thought it had a pretty good English bitter flavor, true to the style. It was very crisp and refreshing, and would be a great beer for sipping on a fall afternoon. It went very well with my mushroom and swiss burger, but I think it would also go very well with BBQ chicken. Since this is a home-state beer (Illinois), I think this might be a fun one to introduce friends to, in order to get them to experiment with different styles.
