Location: On tap at Medici in Normal, IL
Numbers: 6.9% ABV, 77 IBUs, Hops: Columbus, Chinook & Centennial
Appearance & Aroma: Clear and dark golden in color, it had a big, frothy white head, which left some decent lacing on the glass. There was a floral and slightly piney hop aroma with a bit of Belgian spiciness and hint of malt.
Taste & Feel: The body was light-medium and there was a crisp mouthfeel from the carbonation in it. After the carbonation crispness on the front end, there was a spiciness (typical of Belgian beers) along with a sweet bready malt flavor. The hops came through solidly in the dry finish with floral and citrusy flavors mixing with a bit of Belgian-like tart and spice.
Food Pairing: The flavors were complex, but light, so I might pair this to help wash down a thick, but flavorful meal. I think the Belgian spiciness and hoppiness might go well with, and add a layer of complexity to, the spices on a grilled peppercorn steak.
Overall Impression: Both the Belgian spiciness and hoppy flavors came though, but I think the spices came through a bit more than I was hoping. It was a crisp, refreshing beer, and pretty drinkable, and I enjoyed drinking it, but I kept comparing it to the Flying Dog Raging Bitch and the Green Flash Le Freak, which I enjoyed more than this one. I think the citrusy hops in those two, rather than the more floral hops in this one, makes for a better partner with the Belgian yeast flavors. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good, easy drinking beer with complex flavors.
