It’s the last day of work for the week, and my boss was out. So the supervisor covering for him swung by to let me know we could go home early, but that if I wanted to go, several people were headed over to Legends for a quick beer. How could I turn that down. Since I still had to head home to watch the kids, I was looking for something a little light, but still flavorful. Since I’m pretty familiar with New Belgium’s Fat Tire, I thought I’d give this one a try.
It poured an amber-orange color and had a thin white head on it. It had a bit of a toasty pilsner-type smell with a hint of lemon or citrus aroma.
The body was very light, and it had a crisp, carbonated mouthfeel. The flavor was a very light toasty, caramel maltiness with a dose of a lemon-citrus type flavor. It finished with the signature New Belgium toasty/bready yeast flavor, along with a citrusy flavor and a lightly dry finish.
This would probably pair well with a salad or fish dish, as the lemon-citrus flavor of the beer would complement the light meal.
I thought this was a very drinkable beer. While I probably would enjoy the lemon-citrus flavor more during the summer, I always enjoy the toasty/bready flavor from New Belgium’s yeast. Situationally,it wasn’t great for a cold winter evening, but I’m certain it would be refreshing on a hot summer day.
