A friend of mine from work, Jim, took a trip up to Wisconsin with his family and shared with me a few microbrews he brought back from his trip. When I looked in the beer fridge today, one of the beers he brought me back was right inside the door. I’ve had a Potosi beer once before, when my in-laws made it up to Wisconsin, they brought one back and gave it to me. It must be easy to find up there. This particular bottle had 6.5% ABV listed on the label.
It was very clear and golden color with a very small, quickly dissipating head on it. The aroma was lightly crackery, and despite being an ale, it seemed to have a lager-like aroma with hints of caramel.
The body was very light, almost watery, and a crisp mouthfeel from the carbonation in it. The carbonation made it hard to taste a flavor up front, but there was a light cracker and caramel flavor in middle. The finish was lightly caramel with a crisp lager-like finish to it.
As far as a food pairing, it would really go with almost anything, because it is so light. However, the light crackery and caramel flavors might go best with a lightly flaky fish dish.
I was really surprised this was an ale, as the smell and taste reminded me so much of a lager beer. It was drinkable, but lacked a lot of flavor. It would probably be better on a hot summer day, but during this cold streak we’re having it was a little too thin and watery for me.
