231. Boulevard Brewing – Single-Wide IPA India Pale Ale

Boulevard Single Wide IPA India Pale AleWhen I got back to the hotel, I thought I’d hop on the computer and get some work done, and what’s better than a good beer while working.  Right across the street from the hotel was a gas station, and found at least this one beer that I could add to my list.  The bottle says, “Bottle conditioned: In time honored brewing tradition we’ve added a small amount of yeast to this bottle just before packaging to produce a secondary fermentation in the bottle. The yeast, which settles naturally to the bottom of the bottle, encourages further maturation and contributes to the ale’s complex flavor.”  Fortunately, my hotel had an actual glass for me to enjoy the beer in.

It poured a hazy orange color, and it had a full, soapy head, leaving some nice lacing on the glass.  There was a light citrusy aroma, which I might guess to be Cascade hops.

The body was medium, and it had a creamy, smooth mouthfeel despite all of the carbonation that appeared in it.  Up front, the flavor reminded me quite a bit of a slightly bready wheat beer, but in the middle comes a big piney and citrusyhop flavor which gets bigger during the finish.  The flavor almost sticks to the the inside of your mouth during the aftertaste.

The hop bitterness makes it a little difficult to pair with a food, but grilled chicken or fish might be a somewhat neutral flavor that could bring out a more complex flavor in the beer.

While not a beer I might seek out for an interesting flavor, I thought it was pretty drinkable, and not over the top hop flavor like a lot of IPAs. A pretty good beer, it felt like it was probably a little truer to style that big hop bomb IPAs.
