My mom had emergency heart surgery on Thursday, so we rushed to St. Louis to be with her and my dad. It was extremely scary, but the doctors say she’s doing pretty good after the surgery. It was very unexpected and caught my entire family by surprise. We’re praying for her and hope she recovers quickly. After spending the weekend at the hospital with my stomach a bit tied up in a knot, we decided to stop at Schlafly’s Bottleworks for lunch on our way home. As I was looking for something simple, the Winter ESB looked like a good candidate.
As you can see, it was very clear and was a reddish-copper color. There was a very thin head on it with not much carbonation visible in it. I was having a hard time picking up the aroma, which was a very, very light malty caramel smell.
It had a light body and not much carbonation in it. It was crisp and pretty drinkable. There wasn’t much of a flavor up front, with just a hint of caramel coming through in the middle and finish. There was a nice English-like hop bitterness in the finish and a very light fruitiness to it.
It went OK with my taco pizza, but would probably go much better with something like fish and chips, pretzels and mustard or other food. It has a crisp drinkability which would be a nice palate cleanser between heartier or bolder foods.
I enjoyed the fact that it was light and drinkable, but I was hoping for something with a little more flavor. Overall, it wasn’t bad, but it reminded me a bit more of a fall or spring beer than a heartier winter beer
