As I mentioned in my previous post, we’re in my old college town of Columbia, MO, for homecoming at Mizzou. It’s also the first time that ESPN College Gameday has come to Columbia. This morning we took the kids down to enjoy the atmosphere (we helped set a new attendance record at ESPN Gameday with over 18,000 fans) and see the set. Before the show ended, we headed over to Flatbranch to grab an early lunch before the parade. Fortunately, we got a seat next to the bar and got to watch the last 10 minutes of the show (which you can see the Gameday crew making their selection for the MU/OU game on the TV above my beer).
As I’ve mentioned before, I always try to order the cask beer if they have one. True to form, it arrived with a huge creamy head on it and was a dark copper color with a slight haze. There wasn’t much aroma I could pick up through the thick head on the beer.
The body was medium and the mouthfeel was super creamy – due to the big foamy head on it. It had a slightly sweet caramelly malty flavor with a bit of an earthy and slightly spicy hop flavor to it. It was fairly well balanced between bitter and sweet, leaning slightly toward the hoppy side.
It went incredibly well with my Flatbranch burger which was covered in their signature “chokes n cheese.” All in all, a very flavorful meal with a nice smooth ESB to help wash it down.
Between ESPN Gameday and Flatbranch, this was a great start to a great day. The beer was nice and smooth, good for a starting beer at 11 am. Overall, I thought it was a fairly good beer, and was definitely served right, coming out of the cask at room temperature.
