This was one of the pumpkin beers I picked up the other day when I went to the liquor store looking for beers for my Oktoberfest Challenge. I figured with it being called an Imperial Pumpkin Ale and at 8% ABV, it could be good. The label said, “The Mutiny Fleet was ‘berthed’ by Heavy Seas brewers who were discovered secretly brewing small batches of big beers to amuse the pallets of their fellow crew. Since most secrets are best kept bottled up, we’re bringing you these big flavor extrAARGHdinary brews in 22oz bombers. Embrace your inner pyrate and join the mutiny! It’s the great pumpkin… risen at last!”
It had a slightly hazy orange/amber color and a head that fell quickly to almost nothing. There was a pumpkin aroma, as well as cinnamon and some other spices.
The body was medium to full, and it had a smooth, creamy mouthfeel with just a tiny bit of carbonation. There was a slight pumpkin flavor, which gave way to a cinnamon spiciness. It finished with a slightly hard cinnamon flavor, bordering on harsh. The slight carbonation adds to the bite of the cinnamon a bit.
The beer had a lot of spice flavors and a slight bit of pumpkin flavor. Therefore, I think it would go well with pumpkin pie, as its spices would bring something to the pie.
This beer didn’t taste like pumpkin pie in a bottle, instead it was more of a pumpkin spiced beer with a little too much cinnamon. It reminded me a lot of the Schlafly Pumpkin Ale I had a few days ago. Given a little bit of time to let the cinnamon flavor mellow, this would be a very good pumpkin spiced beer.
