I went tot he liquor store and picked up a mix-a-six so that I could get a variety of Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers. This was one a friend from Kansas City had recommended, so I thought I’d pick one up and give it a try. The bottle says, “A tribute to our friend Bob Werkowitch, master brewer and graduate of the US Brewers’ Academy, class of 1947.”
It was very clear and copper in color. It initially had a somewhat thin head, but in this Sam Adams glass with an etched bottom, it grew to a good-sized very creamy head. The aroma was light malty, but there was a slight bit of plasticy aroma as well.
When I took a sip, the body was light and smooth with some carbonation. The mouthfeel was a little bit creamy with thick, creamy head. There was a light caramel flavor up front that stayed consistent into the finish. The aftertaste has a bit of a bitterness and a fuller malty-caramel flavor.
Since this beer is from Boulevard in Kansas City, it would definitely go good with some KC BBQ. I’m thinking this would go very nicely with a good pulled pork sandwich.
It had a good creaminess and a malty flavor which grew to be a bit more caramelly in the aftertaste. Good for cool weather, it was light drinking, but the flavor stuck around in the aftertaste. Overall, I thought it was a good American version of an Oktoberfest.
