Another St. Louis brewery with a pumpkin beer is O’Fallon Brewery. Theirs has been around a few years longer than Schlafly’s Pumpkin Ale. I’ve found O’Fallon’s beers to be a little hit or miss, as I wasn’t a huge fan of their Hemp Hop Rye Amber Ale or their Chocolate Cherry beer, but am a fan of their 5 Day IPA and Wheach.
It had a reddish copper color, and was fairly clear. it had a creamy, foamy head which disappeared somewhat quickly. The aroma was heavy on nutmeg with some light cinnamon and pumpkin smells.
The body was very light and it had a crisp mouthfeel at first, but after a few sips, it seemed a little bit creamy. The crispness came from a carbonation tingle on the tongue, which made it tough to tell any flavor other than the finish and aftertaste. The finish had a nice pumpkin flavor with a bit of cinnamon flavor to it. The cinnamon flavor carried through the aftertaste for a little while.
As far as a food pairing… well, turkey and light gravy would go best with this. So far, this is the beer that most closely reminds me of pumpkin pie in a bottle. If the carbonation were a bit more creamy than sharp, it would be there.
I’d say that this is more of a halloween type beer than those with high alcohol, which might be more appropriate in cooler temperatures. Overall, I thought this was a very good pumpkin beer, that is light, crisp, and drinkable.
