167. Wynkoop Brewing – Fresh Hopped Cask IPA

I enjoyed having the B3K Schwartzbier with my bison burger, but now it was time for dessert.  While my co-worker decided to get a scoop of ice cream, I went for the cask – which just happened to have a fresh hopped IPA with just-picked hops.

I was clear and had a yellowish/orange color with a very thick soapy, bright white head on it.  There was a nice hop aroma which was mostly floral and a little bit piney.

It had a light-medium body and a very creamy and smooth mouthfeel, since it had been pulled from the cask.  The flavor surprised me a bit, as it was little bit of a light lemony flavor up front and middle.  There was a somewhat delicate floral hoppiness that came through in the finish.  However the hop flavor built up a bit in the aftertaste.

As far as a food pairing, I think this would go very well with a nice fish dish.  The lemony flavor would add to the fish seasoning, and the light floral hops would allow the flavors of the fish to come through.

Overall, I thought this was nice and creamy, but it had a little too light of a hop flavor for me to consider this a good IPA.  Don’t get me wrong, this was a very nice beer, and might be good on a summer day on the patio, but based on the light hop flavor, I wouldn’t call this an IPA.

My Rating: ★★½☆☆
