152. Oakshire Brewing – Overcast Espresso Stout

152. Oakshire Brewing - Overcast Espresso StoutI was thoroughly enjoying my last day at the Oregon Brewers Festival, but I noticed I was down to my last few tokens.  So, I decided to head toward another Oregon brewery, especially one that had a short line – not because it wasn’t a good beer, but because a thick coffee stout wasn’t appealing to many on a hot Sunday afternoon.  However, my appreciation for Russian Imperial Stouts drew me to this one.

It was very dark black in color, and it had a thick, creamy, tan head.  The aroma was a nice roasty coffee smell with some hints of cocoa.

When I took a sip, it had a full body and the mouthfeel was very, very smooth, creamy, and velvety.  It had a somewhat sweet chocolate and malty flavor up front, followed by a pleasant, mellow coffee flavor in the finish.  There was a bit of a coffee bitterness in the aftertaste, with not much hop bitterness noticeable at all.

If I had to pair this with a food, It would go very nicely with donuts in the morning (only slightly kidding).  It would also go well with chocolate brownie dessert.

Overall, I really enjoyed the texture of the beer as well as the very nice malt and coffee flavors.  I thought the coffee bitterness in the aftertaste was only slightly astringent, but still very enjoyable.  In the land of super hoppy beers, this was a nice change, and I really liked this beer.

My Rating: ★★★½☆
