15. Mendocino Brewing – White Hawk Select IPA

Mendocino Brewing White Hawk Select IPAIt was good to be home for the weekend.  The weather was fairly nice, partly cloudy and a bit cool.  It was an afternoon that was calling for a nice IPA.  As you can probably tell, I’ve got a sampler pack of Mendocino brews, so I decided to try their White Hawk Select IPA.

According to their website, “White Hawk Original IPA has a rich distinctive hop character and bold malt flavor. This Select IPA has a unique aroma, a clean finish and is brewed to satisfy connoisseurs the world over. We’ve blended American West Coast Cascade Hops with a very generous dose of English Fuggle Hops. This combination makes for a very aromatic character, as well as a truly authentic English flavor which you must taste to believe. White Hawk Original IPA has an ABV of 7.0% and a bitterness of 60 IBU.”

It was an amber/orange color and had a thin head.  Without a doubt, the hop aroma was noticeable.  The flavor was dead on target for hopheads with a great hop flavor.  There was a slight maltiness that was slightly noticeable.  The finish was great and the taste of a raw hop sat in my mouth.

It was a great compliment to a cool spring day, and I enjoyed it as I walked around the yard checking on the progress of my own hop plants.  With a nice hoppy IPA like this one, I can’t really recommend a food to enjoy it with, as I like to enjoy really hoppy beers like this all by themselves so that I can let the hop flavor sit and linger in my mouth.
