As I mentioned in my last post, it was a good day – a tour of the Widmer Brothers Brewery, the Full Sail Riverplace smoker, and a nice dinner and a few more Full Sail beers at McCormick & Schmick’s. My friend/coworker and I headed up the Riverplace walkway to a place she was familiar with for a few more drinks. There was an incredible view of the river and bridge while I enjoyed a Daily Bread Common from Everybody’s Brewing.
It was clear and had a straw-yellow color. The head was bright white and it had some nice lacing as I drank it. There was a slight bready – almost cracker-like – aroma to it.
The body was fairly light, and it was crisp and refreshing, with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. There was a light, almost pilsner-like maltiness up front, which gave way to a nice almost woody flavor. It reminded me a bit of a musky type woodiness, like wormwood, but it was just the right amount of it – it was still clean, crisp, and refreshing.
If I had to pair this with a food, I think I’d choose a dish I’ve had once – a cedar plank seabass – where the seabass is cooked in the oven on a plank of cedar so it picks up some of the woody flavors.
Overall, I thought this was a very good beer and a nice representation of its style. I haven’t had much fresh Anchor Steam here in the midwest, but I must admit that I liked this better than the Anchor Steam in the bottle from my local liquor store.
