I was looking for something to do on Saturday morning before the Oregon Brewers Festival and the smoker at Full Sail Riverplace. When I attended the Brewmasters’ dinner, I got a chance to meet Kurt and Rob Widmer (the Widmer Brothers), and they recommended I stop by to take their brewery tour. Reservations were required, so I called and was able to get myself and my friend/coworker who lives there in Portland on the tour. As I mentioned in my last couple posts, this tour started with samples. The actual tour was fairly short and ended back at their restaurant/taphouse. It was the perfect time to grab a bite to eat before heading over to Full Sail Riverplace for the smoker. At lunch, I decided to try the Timbrrr Imperial IPA.
When it arrived it was a coppery-orange color, and it had a very thick, creamy, cream-colored head on it. The aroma was mostly sweet, malty, and caramelly, but with a nice hop smell to match.
It had a solidly medium body on it, and the creamy head gave it a bit of a creamy and smooth mouthfeel. When I took a drink, it had a nice sweet malty flavor, followed by a good hop flavor. The finish was a nice balance of both the malty and hoppy flavors.
This went very nicely with the burger I had for lunch, but I think it could also be very good with thicker meals, such as BBQ or steak. It would lend itself nicely to dishes with mushrooms or caramelized onions I think.
Overall, I thought this was one of the most well balanced Imperial IPA’s I’ve had, and actually lent itself a bit more to the malty side. However, don’t get me wrong, there was a heavy dose of hops to match. With the Widmer house yeast, it was very clean, crisp, and refreshing for such a big beer. If you happen to find this in or around Portland, I recommend you try it.
