136. Boulevard Brewing – Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale Draft

I’m most disappointed in myself that I came all the way to Portland, Oregon to try good local beer (not that this wasn’t good), and I end up having a beer from Boulevard Brewing in Kansas City.  I also told myself that I wouldn’t give in to this big farmhouse ale/sour beer craze.  However, as I mentioned, the lines were getting long, and it was easiest to get the beers which were closest.

It was a very light yellow color and had a very thin head on it.  There was that classic farmhouse aroma which I might describe as a wet leather and hay smells, along with a light lemony smell.

When I took a drink, it was very light and crisp, with some light lemony flavors up front.  That was followed by some slight peppery flavors, giving way to that wet, leathery flavor in the finish.  It wasn’t overpowering, just the right amount of farmhouse type flavor in the finish.

Due to the lightness, I never, ever would have guessed that it was 8% ABV and had 40 IBUs.  I guess it has to do with the corn flakes in it.  As far as a food pairing, I would say this might go very well with a BLT, with the lemon and peppery flavors pulling from the sandwich, leaving the farmhouse finish as the signature of the beer.

Overall, it was a light beer with some interesting character.  As I mentioned, I never would have guessed it had the alcohol or bitterness it claimed on the info sheet.
