As I mentioned in my last post, I stopped at Double Mountain Brew Pub around the corner from Full Sail to have some dinner. I was told they had the best pizza in town, so that’s what I ordered. When my food arrived, it was also time for another drink. I was debating between a couple of their beers, but a local sitting next to me recommended the Hop Lava. The menu says, “This big, glowing, powerful IPA is packed with copious amounts of Northwest hops. We balance the considerable hop flavor with a sturdy backbone of malty goodness. The result? Explosive! Our flagship IPA. Brewed with Gambrinus Pilsner and Munich malt, Centennial and Cascade hops. 7.0% ABV, 75 IBU.”
When it arrived, it was pretty clear and was amber in color. It had almost no head, just a little creamy ring around the glass. It had a big citrusy hop aroma.
When I finally took a drink, it had a fairly thin body for such a big beer, and I instantly noticed a thin malt flavor. However, the finish certainly finished with a big citrusy hop flavor. The aftertaste of hops lasted and stuck around in my mouth for a few minutes after taking a drink.
I liked the doughy crust their pizza had, and it was a very good pizza. The beer did go well with it, but I felt as though I was using the pizza to cleanse my palate of the hop oils between drinks. For a hop lover like me, it was a pretty good beer.
