The can says High Tide is an American wheat with orange zest. “Easy drinking, bright, light, and zesty. Enjoy orange peels? We put in all of them. Whether it’s a bull ride you’re after or just a casual surf, assume this wheat ale delivers however the tidal force is arranged.”
Location: Poured into a pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 5.5% ABV, ~180 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s slightly hazy and bright orange in color. The head had surprisingly large bubbles and was fairly rocky – falling to a thin ring around the edge of the glass after a minute or so. It has a light bready aroma with hints of orange citrus.
Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel is crisp from the carbonation in the beer. The beer has a light bready base with some a touch of sweet juiciness from the orange zest. In the middle, the light sweetness is equalized with light orange peel bitterness. The beer finishes the same way it started, with a light breadiness and a touch of sweet orange juiciness. The aftertaste is brief, lasting for a few seconds before fading quickly.
Food Pairing: This beer is mostly bready with some lighter orange flavors, and since the flavors aren’t super strong, it could almost go with anything. However, I think I’d probably look to enjoy this beer with some fish tacos or to counteract some spicy Mexican food.
Overall Impression: Since it was an American wheat beer, I was expecting a good bready base, but I wasn’t sure what to expect from the orange zest. Fortunately, the orange zest was a light complement to this beer and didn’t become the primary flavor. Overall, I thought this was a good, light, refreshing beer that was great for our tailgate, since they were quite crushable. If you’re looking for a good beer for a Mizzou tailgate or something to put in your cooler when you hit the golf course, this would be a good one!
