Location: Poured from the pint can into a TEKU pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 7% ABV, ~240 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: Its brick red in color with pinkish hues when held up to the light. It’s hazy and had a fair amount of sediment in the bottom of the can. It also had a big, bright white rocky head that fell to a ring around the edge of the glass after a minute. It has a fruity aroma with a blueberry and blackberry smells with a bit of saison-yeast-like spiciness underneath.
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium and the mouthfeel is crisp from the carbonation and acidity. Up front there’s a sweet and tart berry-like flavor that reminds me of a sour cherry. In the middle, the sweetness fades and there’s a mix of fruit flavor with some maltiness underneath. The acidity and tartness of the fruitiness bursts through in the finish leaving a sweet tart-like aftertaste.
Food Pairing: We enjoyed Christmas cookies while building the gingerbread house and I can’t imagine a better pairing. The spiciness and breadiness of the gingerbread contrasted the sweet tart flavors of the beer and together it was like a fruity Christmas treat.
Overall Impression: The fruity aromas and flavors where apparent in the aroma and flavors. I liked the maltiness that came in during the middle to help balance the acidic tartness. Overall, it was a very good, complex beer, and if you love sour beers, you’ll love this beer.
