Location: Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 7.2% ABV, ~230 Calories
Ingredients: Malt: American 2-row, English Maris Otter, Caramel 40L, Caramel 80L, Victory, Munich 10L, Chocolate; Hops: Centennial, Simcoe, Columbus
Appearance & Aroma: It’s brick-red in color, almost brown, with a huge pillowy, very light tan head on it. It appears to be very clear, and it has a nice malty aroma to it.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium-full and the mouthfeel is smooth, almost creamy. The flavor up front is malty with a little bit of earthy bitterness. The middle is mostly malty, with the bitterness coming back out in the finish. The finish is still malty, but with a good dose of earthy bitterness. The maltiness slightly edges out the bitterness in the finish, but it’s the bitterness that carries into the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This beer had a good amount of maltiness, which I love to pair with something like a steak in order to balance the sweetness with some saltiness. I might also pair it with something like a burger or chili.
Overall Impression: I enjoyed the malty flavors in this beer and appreciated the back-and-forth of the maltiness and bitterness. It was nicely balanced and drinkable. Overall, I enjoyed this beer and thought it was a pretty good amber ale… as I prefer them to be balanced a little bit more toward the malty side. I’ll definitely have to keep my eye out for more beers from Maine Beer Co. as this one was a very good beer.
