Location: Poured into a TEKU pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 10% ABV, 24.5° Plato OG, 360 Calories
Ingredients: Malts: 2-row, caramel malt, malted wheat and a blend of American roasted malts; Hops: Willamette and American Fuggle
Appearance & Aroma: It’s pure black in color, with no light visible through it. It never really formed a head, only a creamy, light tan ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. It has a very nice dark chocolate aroma, almost like a dark chocolate Milky Way candy bar.
Taste & Feel: The body is full and the mouthfeel is smooth and lightly viscous. The flavor up front is a very smooth light roastiness with hints of dark chocolate. In the middle, the dark chocolate flavor becomes a bit more rich. The finish is even more flavorful, with some more smooth roasty flavors. There’s a mix of dark chocolate and a smooth roastiness that’s a bit coffee like. The coffee and roasty flavors last for a couple minutes in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: There is a good amount of dark chocolate and coffee roastiness in this beer. Therefore, I’d probably load up on chocolate and pair this with a fudge brownie. It would also be great to contrast it with something creamy and tart like a cheesecake covered in tart cherries or raspberries.
Overall Impression: This beer has aged perfectly, smoothing out both the roastiness and bitterness. Even though it has a lot of dark chocolate flavor and roastiness, it’s not necessarily sweet or overly bitter, but it is very flavorful. This was a very nicely aged beer, and it really makes me curious to know what it tastes like when it’s fresh. Thank you @jonathanmoxey for this beer. Cheers!
