I was up in Chicago for work today and stopped at Imperial Oak Brewing on my way home. Thanks to my friend Nate for the suggestion. So, when I got home for dinner, I thought I’d crack open another beer. I can’t remember exactly where or when I picked up this beer, but a quick bit of online research showed me it had been discontinued almost a year ago.
Location: Poured into a tall pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 5.5% ABV, ~130 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s obviously black in color with ruby-brown highlights when held up to the light. It has a very thin head that barely covers the top. There’s a bit of a toasty aroma with hints of roastiness to it.
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium and the mouthfeel is smooth. The flavor up front is malty with a bit of toastiness. The flavor leveled off in the middle and finished with a slightly roastier taste. The malty toasty-roasty flavor lasted briefly in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: I thought this beer had a smooth toasty and roasty flavor, and therefore, I would contrast that with something sweet. I think this beer would be perfect by the campfire with a s’more or at a restaurant with a Baked Alaskan.
Overall Impression: It was a very smooth beer. I enjoyed the toasty flavors, and the roasty flavors were all in the background, so it wasn’t astringent at all. I thought it was a very drinkable beer, and might be a good one to introduce macro-beer drinkers to dark beer. Overall, I thought it was a good beer I use to show novice craft beer drinkers that dark beer can be light and smooth… that is, if it weren’t discontinued.
