Location: Poured into a curved pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 5.8% ABV, 40 IBUs, ~150 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s brownish in color, and mostly clear. It had a decent head on it when I poured it, with a soapy like texture to it. It has a mix of caramel maltiness and grassy hoppiness for aroma.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is lightly crisp. The flavor up front is a little malty with some spicy-earthy bitterness. The maltiness overtakes the hops briefly in the middle, but the bitterness dominates the finish. The bitterness in the finish is spicy and quite earthy and it lasts for a couple of minutes and the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This has a lot of bitterness. So, I’d go with something savory and salty to pair with it, like a burger, which could cut through the bitterness a bit.
Overall Impression: After the hoppiness of their other beers, I was looking for something a bit maltier from them. While there were some malty flavors, the hop bitterness overtook it by quite a bit. I didn’t really enjoy the spicey-earthy hop flavors, and when mixed with the maltiness, it was not a pleasant flavor at all. I don’t think I have anymore beers from Flat 12 Bierwerks, which is a good thing.
