Location: On tap and served in a regular tumbler style pint glass at The Loop in Rochester, MN
Numbers: 5.75% ABV, 30 IBUs, ~160 Calories
Ingredients: Malts: 2-row, pale, aromatic, caramel, carapils, chocolate; Hops: Palisade, Goldings.
Appearance & Aroma: It’s very clear and is a dark brown mahogany color. It has a thin, white head with some larger bubbles, and a stale nutty brown malt-like aroma.
Taste & Feel: The body is thin and the mouthfeel is crisp. There’s a nutty and red-malt like sweetness up front, followed by a bourbon flavor that comes in the middle. The bourbon flavors mellow a bit in the finish, with the maltiness and nuttiness in the background. These flavors last for a minute or so in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: The maltiness, nuttiness, and bourbon flavors would pair perfectly with BBQ or burger, much the same way TGIFriday’s makes their Jack Daniels baby back ribs. It wasn’t necessarily the best choice with my fish tacos – which were very good.
Overall Impression: With a bourbon barrel aged beer, I expect some body behind it. I was a bit disappointed by the light body and crisp mouthfeel. I thought the bourbon flavors weren’t bad, but it felt a little bit artificial. I did enjoy the maltiness, I just wish there was the body to back it up. Overall, the flavors weren’t bad, I guess I was just expecting something a bit more solid and bold.
