Location: Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 8% ABV, 90 IBUs, 250 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s amber-red in color and extremely clear. There appears to be a good amount of carbonation in it, but almost no head, just a thin layer of bubbles across the top. The aroma is mostly hoppy with pine and citrus and some maltiness in the background.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is smooth with a bit of hop crispness. There’s a little bit of caramel maltiness up front before a resiny citrus hop flavor quickly kicks in. The hop flavors grow bigger through the middle and into the finish where it’s joined by a good dose of bitterness. The resiny-citrus bitterness and flavors last for a minute of two in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This beer has a good amount of resiny-citrus hop flavors and bitterness, making it a good pairing for a thick juicy cheeseburger.
Overall Impression: I enjoyed the resiny-citrusy hop flavors, as it reminded me a lot of my homebrewed IPAs using my homegrown Cascade hops. It had a little bit of caramel maltiness in the background, but it didn’t have a good presence throughout. Overall, it was a good hop flavor, but I would have like a bit more malty backbone and richness. Overall, it was a like a good homebrewed IPA, with a good hop flavor. I’d recommend trying it, but among all the IPA’s out there, there are plenty I’d rather go to.
