54. Avery Brewing – Redpoint Ale

Avery Brewing Redpoint ale redI really like Avery’s big beers, so I was excited when I found a few of their beers in the “mix a six” area of my local liquor store.  The label says, “Redpoint Ale.  Ahhh, Success!  It’s taken a lot of time and effort to create this unique, rich red ale with a distinct hop bouquet.  Enjoy our achievement in celebration of your own accomplishments.  Cheers!”

It had a decent head when I poured it, which became a nice creamy ring around the top of the glass.  It was cloudy and had a reddish-brown hue.  The aroma was very malty, with a nice bold, sweet caramelly scent.  I’m not sure how old this beer was (there were no markings on it), but there was no “distinct hop bouquet” as promised on the label.

It had a light-to-medium body, and seemed to be a little crisp on my tongue from the carbonation.  The caramelly maltiness filled my mouth and was the most noticeable characteristic of the beer.  Again, after reading the label, I was expecting more hop flavor, but I’m not sure how old the beer was.  There was a bit of earthy hoppiness in the finish, which was followed by a thorough dryness.

Overall, it was a decent caramelly, malty ale.  If I had to pair it with a food, I’d recommend BBQ, especially something like babyback ribs.  Although it’s a decent beer, I’m not sure if I’d reach for it again in the bottle.  I would, however, maybe try it on draft – to get it a little more fresh – assuming I could find it somewhere.
