I’m still going through the beer fridge, trying to thin it out a bit. I’ve found several beers which were hiding and have been in there for a while. I remember picking up this beer, along with several others in a mixed 6 pack, during my trip to New Orleans a year ago (at the time I visited Crescent City Brewery in the French Quarter and had the Abita Amber on my way out of town).
Location: Poured into a Stella Artois chalice from the bottle at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 5.6% ABV, 28 IBUs, 60 SRM, 168 Calories, 15g Carbs, 2.4g Protein
Appearance & Aroma: It’s dark brown in color, almost black, but some red highlights were noticeable when held up to the light. It’s got a finger-thick, very creamy, cream-colored head on it that had some great retention and left some nice lacing on the glass. The aroma is a bit like toffee with some nuttiness.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is very creamy. There’s not much flavor up front, only a little bit of light caramel and nuttiness. The flavors grow a bit in the middle, but really come through most in the finish. The finish had a good amount of brown and dark malt flavors with some nuttiness and light raisin like flavors, which lasted briefly in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: The flavors in this beer were rather light, and it would be a good beer to enjoy with a flavorful food, as this beer would help smooth things out between bites. I’d probably pair this with a thick, juicy steak or a bowl of chili, as this beer would add a little flavor, but would let the food fill you up.
Overall Impression: With a name like Turbodog, I was expecting something that would have a high ABV or had coffee in it or something like that. It’s probably called that because it goes down so quick and easy. It was a very smooth, drinkable beer with some light flavors. Overall, I enjoyed this beer and would definitely have another one when in the Big Easy.
