It poured a dark amber, and reddish color, and had a decent head, which fell to a creamy ring around the edges of glass. It’s aroma was definitely hop forward and had a bit of a citrusy and earthy hop smell. There was also a little bit of maltiness that came through in the nose as well.
It had a bit of maltiness upfront, which was quickly conquered by an earthy hoppiness, which finished in a very spicy finish. I haven’t had too many rye beers so I’m not sure if that spiciness comes from the hops or the rye, but it’s a very definite spiciness in the finish which lingers on in my mouth for almost a minute after drinking it.
If I had to pair this with a food, I’d go with a steak, as I think the peppery and spiciness would go well with it. Overall, it’s a pretty good IPA, but the spiciness kept it from being as refreshing as I had hoped.
