446. Margaritaville Brewing Co – Landshark Lager

Busch InBev / Margaritaville Brewing - Landshark LagerAs I’ve mentioned in my last couple of posts, I’m on vacation with my family in Florida.  Today we stopped for lunch at a place on John’s Pass called Gators so my son could try gator nuggets.  It was a great place to sit waterside and watch the boats, birds, people and the drawbridge (which you can see is open in the background of my photo).  Their beer list was limited to the typical big brewery beers, but I haven’t added this one to my list yet, so I thought I’d go for it.

Location: On tap and served in a clear, plastic solo cup at Gators at John’s Pass in Treasure Island, Florida.

Numbers: 4.7% ABV, 150 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It was bright yellow in color and was very, very clear.  There was almost no head on it when it arrived at my table, and never seemed to develop one.  Although, there appeared to be a fair amount of carbonation in it.  The aroma was bright and malty with a familiar adjunct smell.

Taste & Feel: The body was very light and the mouthfeel was like water with a slight bit of carbonation crispness.  The flavors up front were lightly sweet and malty with a bit of that cracker-like adjunct flavor.  These flavors continued through the middle and there was a very light citrusy hop flavor in the finish.  The finish was clean with almost no lingering flavors in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: The flavors were light enough that this beer could go with almost anything.  For me, I enjoyed this beer with some grilled fish tacos, and the flavors went perfectly together.  I didn’t put a lime in the beer, but the beer mixed nicely with the lime I put on the tacos, as well as the flavors from the fish and cabbage.

Overall Impression: I was certainly not expecting much from this beer, as it’s a very light lager, meant for enjoying on hot days by the sea.  The body and flavors were definitely light, and it was certainly drinkable, but I was a bit surprised by it.  I found it to have a bit more flavor than competitor Corona, with no light-struck skunkiness/bitterness. It was hot sitting out in the sun, and I finished nearly half of this beer before I realized it.  While it’s not one I’d grab every day, it is very light and drinkable, and is one I think I’d reach on a very hot summer day.
