402. 4 Hands Brewery – Cast Iron Oatmeal Brown

4 Hands Brewery - Cast Iron Oatmeal BrownI’m in St. Louis this weekend to spend some time with my friend Joe.  The plan is to hit several microbreweries this weekend, as well as trade some homebrew.  I finally made it into town after a long day at work, and we headed out to Milagro Modern Mexican in Webster Groves.  They had several craft beers on tap, and I was looking forward to trying something from one of St. Louis’ newest microbreweries – 4 Hands.

Location: On draft, in a pint glass, at Milaro Modern Mexican in Webster Groves, MO.

Numbers: ~ 5.6% ABV, ~ 209 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It was dark, but it appeared dark brown in color, and fairly clear with some ruby red highlights when held up to the light.  The head was foamy, about a finger thick, and left some nice lacing on the glass.  The aroma was nutty and slightly bready.

Taste & Feel: The body was medium and the mouthfeel was smooth, but slightly crisp.  The flavors were roasty and nutty up front, followed by some light cocoa and graininess in the middle and finish – along with the ever-present light roasty nuttiness.

Food Pairing: This beer went nicely with my fish tacos, adding a unique nutty/roasty dimension to the sweet and spiciness of the tacos.  However, I think this beer would go nicely with a heartier meal, such as a steak, stew, or shepherds pie.

Overall Impression: It was very flavorful, and I enjoyed the toasty and nutty flavors present throughout this beer.  It was one of the more flavorful brown ales I’ve had, and overall, I thought it was a pretty good start to my St. Louis microbrew weekend.
