Location: Enjoyed a pilsner glass, at Crescent City Brewhouse in New Orleans, LA.
Appearance & Aroma: It was extremely cloudy and gold in color with hints of orange. There was a very thick, creamy head which fell after several minutes. There was a wheaty, slightly brown-paper-bag-like aroma to it.
Taste & Feel: The body was solid and full with a creamy mouthfeel and hints of carbonation crispness. There was a bready and wheat malt flavor up front with a hint of cardboard box flavor. The flavor evolved in the middle, finishing with a citrusy, lemon-orange flavor on the back end.
Food Pairing: Because I’m in New Orleans, I would definitely pair this with a fried shrimp po-boy sandwich. The bready-wheaty flavors would complement the breaded, fried shrimp, while the citrusy flavors on the back end would add a nice complexity and add to the lemon sprinkled on the po-boy.
Overall Impression: I wasn’t too impressed with the first beer I had here, the Red Stallion Vienna-style lager, and was hoping for a better showing from their specialty beer. It started off stronger than the previous beer, with a solid body. However, the wheaty flavors were mixed with a boxy/paper bag flavor and aroma that seemed a bit off. It did evolve into a citrusy flavor in the finish, but it was still a fairly bland beer that seemed to try to appeal to a broad audience.
