378. St. Louis Brewery / Schlafly – Oatmeal Stout

St. Louis Brewery Schlafly Oatmeal StoutIt’s the day after Thanksgiving and we headed to St. Louis to spend some time with my dad and sister.  We decided to head over to my cousin’s new house to see it along with their adorable daughter.  They offered me a beer while we were hanging out, and took this beer.  I checked my list and saw I hadn’t had it yet, so I thought I’d write a quick review.

Location: Enjoyed a bottle, at my cousin’s house in St. Louis, MO.

Numbers: 5.7% ABV, 40 IBUs, 14.5º PLATO, 65 SRM, ~ 135 Calories

Ingredients: Hops: Northdown (UK), Marynka (PL); Malts: 2-row and caramel malted barley, roasted barley, oat flakes; American Ale Yeast

Appearance & Aroma: I had this in the bottle, but have had it before, so I know it’s black in color and has an off white head.  It has a roasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate.

Taste & Feel: It has a full body and a smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel.  There’s a bit of semi-sweet chocolate flavor up front, followed by roasted maltiness with hints of cocoa bittereness in the finish.

Food Pairing: The flavors in this beer are light chocolate, but the body is full, therefore, I think it would go nicely with a lighter dessert, such as angel food cake or even ice cream.  I think this would also make an excellent ice cream float.

Overall Impression: It was extremely smooth and drinkable.  I enjoyed the smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel, along with the lighter chocolate like flavors.  However, it didn’t stand out as very flavorful or complex.  All in all, it’s just an easy to drink, smooth, every day kind of stout.

My Rating: ★★★☆☆
