369. Walnut Brewery – Indian Peaks Pale Ale

Walnut Brewery - Indian Peaks Pale AleWe’re on our second day of work in Boulder, Colorado, and stopped at Walnut Brewery.  I was here almost a year ago and stopped at this very same spot and had their St. James Irish Red, and their 1123 Black IPA.  This time I decided to have something a bit lighter and went for their pale ale.

According to the menu’s description of this beer, “North American two-row and Pilsen malts are blended to give a pale straw color and pleasant, dry maltiness. A generous use of Cascade hops lends a crisp, citrus finish.”

Location: Enjoyed in an imperial pint glass, at Walnut Brewery in Boulder, CO.

Ingredients: Malt: North American two-row, Pilsen. Hops: Cascade

Appearance & Aroma: It was straw golden in color and fairly hazy.  There was a thin, creamy head on it, that (as you can see) left some fairly nice lacing on the glass.  There was a light malty, slightly grainy aroma with a bit of grassy and resin-like hops in the background.

Taste & Feel: It had a light-medium body and a fairly crisp mouthfeel.  There was a hint of light caramel, slighly honey-like sweetness up front, giving way to a bright, clean, citrusy and piney hop flavor in the middle.  The finish was crisp and clean with only a slight bit of malty and hoppy flaovrs in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This went very nicely with my bison burger, but could go with almost anything on the menu.  I had piece of a co-workers pizza and it went great with that as well.  No matter what food you choose, this beer helps clean the palate, leaving it ready for another flavorful bite of food.

Overall Impression: Normally I go for more flavorful options on the beer menu, but I’d already had a few of those the last time I was here.  Therefore, I went with a fairly safe beer option this time.  The pale ale offered light flavors of both malts and hops, but in just the right amounts.  It was very drinkable, giving just enough flavor to both the malts and hops.  A good beer for the style, which I’d recommend on a nice sunny day in Boulder.
