Location: On tap at BJ’s Brewhouse in McAllen, TX.
Numbers: 8.5% ABV, 60 IBUs, ~ 240 Calories
Ingredients: Malt: 2-row Pale, Crystal Malts, Chocolate, Black, Roasted Barley Oats, Brown Sugar, Molasses; Hops: Magnum, Centennial
Appearance & Aroma: It was dark black, and even when I held it up to the light, it wasn’t very opaque. It had a very, very thick creamy head which seemed to stick around for a long time. It made me think that perhaps this beer is carbonated with nitrogen.
Taste & Feel: It had a very smooth and creamy mouthfeel, but it had a much lighter body than I was expecting from such a big beer. The smoothness allowed the complexity of chocolate, muted coffee, and roasty malt flavors to be easily detected. The finish was fairly dry with the roasty flavors lasting for a little bit into the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This would go nicely with BBQ, a chocolate dessert, or as I had it – all by itself as its own dessert.
Overall Impression: I enjoyed the smoothness of this beer, both in feel and taste. I thought it had a fair amount of complex flavor with chocolate, coffee, and roastiness. While I liked these things, I thought it was a pretty safe beer. It was a pretty good beer, with some complexity, but there wasn’t much oustanding about it. Overall, I’d have it again, but not one that left me craving another.
