Earlier that morning, I got up to walk over to the Louisville Slugger factory and Museum. On the way over, I noticed a billboard for Kentucky Ale, and since I don’t often find myself in the Bluegrass State, I wanted to try some while I was there – along with a “Hot Brown,” which is another uniquely Louisville sort of thing.
When the beer arrived, I noticed it was tremendously clear and had a very thin head on it. As you can see by the photo, it had had a pale amber color. It had a bit of a malty/bready smell to it although it was a bit faint.
It had a very light body, but it was clean, crisp, and refreshing. It was more on the malty side of the scale, but the hop was noticeable in the finish. Although it was light, it had a caramel and bready note that gave it a little flavor.
Overall, I think this would probably be a good session beer for sitting at a bar shooting the breeze with friends or at a football game tailgate in the fall. It’s close enough to big brewery mainstream beers, but with a bit of flavor, so it’s obvious they’re trying to catch experimenters and people just crossing over to craft beers. It went very well with my Hot Brown – if only to complete the local meal – but it would probably go well with almost any food. Perhaps because I’m in the south, I think it would go very well with a BBQ pork sandwich.
