I’m in Miami this week for work, and when we wrapped up for the day, we went for lunch. I have had almost no experience with Indian food, so when my coworker suggested it, I thought I’d give it a try. We went to Guru in Miami Beach. I started with this Kingfisher Premium, an Indian beer, and then had the chicken tikka masala. The food was pretty good, and I enjoyed the opportunity to try something different.
Location: Bottle at Guru in Miami Beach, FL
Numbers: 4.8% ABV, 140 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It had a slightly hazy golden color and a white bubbly head which fell fairly quickly. There was a corn bread-like malt aroma that was slightly vegetal.
Taste & Feel: I was surprised at the body of the beer, as it was a bit more viscous than I expected. It was medium bodied and fairly smooth. There was a crispness along with a malty, bready, pilsner flavor in the middle. It finished very refreshing, with very, very little bitterness.
Food Pairing: The beer is light enough in flavor that it could probably help to wash down almost any food. The medium body gives it a little bit of extra mouthfeel to help wash down spicy Indian foods.
Overall Impression: I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect from the Indian food, or the Indian beer. The beer was very light in flavor, but, as I mentioned, it had a surprisingly solid body. It doesn’t detract from the flavors of the food, but it doesn’t add anything either. The carbonation and light flavors made it very crisp, refreshing, and drinkable. However, the aroma wasn’t very good, and it certainly didn’t have much flavor to it. I guess it would go down easily on a hot summer day, but I think I’d rather have a Budweiser.
