We had a very long day today in Colorado – going from Denver, up to Boulder and the 4 Mile Canyon wildfire, then up to Greely, over to Loveland, and then near the Denver airport for the evening. After a day like that, I was ready to have a big bison burger at Ted’s Montana Grill and put down some good beers. Since I had a chance to try Odell’s St. Lupulin Extra Pale Ale, which was very nice, I thought I’d give their basic IPA a chance.
It was very clear and had a golden-orange hue. There was a very thin head on it, but it appeared to have some nice lacing where the head had dissipated. There was a slighly floral and slightly citrusy hop aroma to it.
The taste was slightly malty up front, giving way to the floral hop flavor. However, it seemed to finish with a nice balanced malty and citrusy hop flavor. As it should, it fell a little more toward the hoppy side, but it was still well balanced.
This went superbly with my bison burger, but as I drank it, it took me back to grilling up brats on college football Saturdays. It was very drinkable and well balanced, so I think it would probably go well with almost any food.
This was exactly what I needed after a long day driving all over the Denver area – a crisp, refreshing, drinkable IPA with a nice pleasant hop flavor. If you have access to this beer where you live, it would be a great grill-side companion.
