My wife and I went to St. Louis for the weekend and went out with a friend and his wife. A fellow homebrewer and beer lover, my friend suggested we try the International Tap House (iTap) in Soulard. They’ve got a ton of great beers on tap, so we thought it would be a good place to try a few new ones. We saw that the Founders Black Biscuit was on the menu scheduled to be tapped today. Sure enough, it had just been tapped, and my friend and I enjoyed the first couple of beers from it.
It was very black in color and had a very, very thick tan head which stuck around for quite some time. It had a very distinct bourbon barrel type smell.
The body was fairly thick and chewy – almost like motor oil. There was a dark malty flavor up front followed by an almost syrupy licorice flavor. It was a bit more of a malty black licorice flavor, not quite as strong as Jagermeister.
This is one of those strong, big, flavorful beers that are meant to be enjoyed by themselves, without a food pairing. So, I won’t recommend you pair this with a food, instead, enjoy it as a dessert beer, with a cigar, or as a nightcap.
I really loved the aroma coming from this beer, and the taste was very rich and flavorful. I’m really glad I got a chance to try this beer.
