After visiting Mt. Hood in the morning and stopping at the Horse Brass Pub for a Mt. Hood Hogs Back Stout pulled from the cask, I headed back over to the Oregon Brewers Festival. As an occasional listener of The Brewing Network, I had heard of 21st Amendment and their Hell or High Watermelon Wheat beer. Since hearing about it, I wanted to try it just to see what it was like.
It was a very, very pale yellow color, and it had a soapy and creamy white head on it. There was a bit of a melon aroma to it, and a bit of a cucumber like smell.
The body was extremely light and the carbonation made my tongue tingle a bit. While it was fairly light with carbonation up front, it was followed by a bit of a sharpness on my tongue in the aftertaste. I honestly couldn’t tell if it was from the carbonation or a bit of a tart watermelon flavor.
The only food I can see pairing this with is real watermelon. I was definitely not a fan of the flavor or the sharpness of the carbonation or watermelon.
I think I was expecting a light, crisp, summer beer that would be refreshing on a hot day. Instead, I found it a bit sharp and not very drinkable.
