As I mentioned in my review of Upright Brewing’s Reggae Junkie Gruit, I had seen a few good comments about this brewery before coming to Portland, so since their #6 rye beer was on tap, I thought I’d give it a try.
It was deep brown in color, and I noticed some hints of dark ruby colors in the light. The head was very thin, with only a thin ring of creaminess around the rim of the glass. I couldn’t smell much from it, only a slight malty and peppery rye aroma.
The body was on the light-medium side and it was crisp and drinkable. The flavors were a bit light and fruity, with some roasty and chocolaty flavors. There were some spicy/peppery flavors from the rye in the aftertaste, as well as some slight hints of lemongrass.
It went well with my burger and fries, but would probably go very well with some thicker asian foods like Mongolian beef. Overall, it was a unique beer with flavors I was not expecting from its color – as the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover. It was an interesting beer, and given the chance, I think I might try it again.
