After a long day brewing, and a fun day at the Oregon Brewers Festival Brewmasters Dinner, it was time to unwind. One of the guys from Full Sail took me to the EastBurn, a pub there in Portland. It was a cool place with some nice Oregon beers on tap. The back patio was interesting, with tables and seats which were suspended from ropes from the ceiling. That night, there was a small event being put on by reps from Deschutes, so I tried their Miss Spelt Hefeweizen. You can read the description, but it is brewed using Spelt – a type of Bavarian wheat malt – and is 5.3% ABV with 23 IBUs.
It had a hazy orangish hue and a thin head on it. I could smell a bit of bubblegum and clove from it.
When I took a drink, it was a bit heavier than I was expecting, with a somewhat creamy mouthfeel from the carbonation. The first flavor I noticed was a bit of a sweet maltiness, followed quickly by a spiciness. The flavors reminded me quite a bit of a saison with a heavy pepperiness and notes of lemon and clove. I only tasted a slight floral hop flavor.
Overall, it was an OK beer, but it had more of a spiciness than I was expecting, and the body was a bit heavy for my liking on a hot summer eavening. The flavor is unique and good, but I don’t think it was what I was expecting from a hefeweizen.
