103. Double Mountain – Dapper Dan Nitro Brown Ale Draft

After another great day of brewing at Full Sail Brewing, it was time for dinner.  Since I hadn’t explored Hood River much outside of Full Sail, a few people had recommended I walk down to Double Mountain for dinner.  I was told they had some of the best pizza in town, and some pretty good beers.  I was looking for something with some flavor, but also nice, light, and smooth.  The menu says, “Dapper Dan is a true session ale in the British tradition.  It is robust in flavor yet quite low in alcohol, to enable rich conversation over plenty of pints without getting totally shnockered.  Four different roasted malts add complexity, while our Kolsch yeast delivers its classic roundness and a restrained fruitiness… Brewed with Gambrinus Organic Pilsner and Dark Munich malt, imported brown, crystal and roasted malts, Warrior and Sterling hops. 3.5% ABV, 31 IBU.”

When it was served, it was a dark brown color – almost black – and it had a nice, thick creamy nitro head on it.  I noticed a slighly nutty malt aroma, but I think the thick nitro head prevented me from smelling much of it.

When I took a drink, it had a very light body, and an obvious creamy mouthfeel due to the nitro.  The flavor was a light nutty malt flavor, with the nutty flavor increasing in the finish.  There was a very slight bitterness in the finish, but I couldn’t tell if that was from from the roasted malts or hops.

The lightness of this beer would allow for it to go with almost anything.  With its nutty character, I could see it going very well with some Pad Thai, or other peanut chicken dish.  Overall, I thought this was a great beer for finishing off a hot summer day – nice and light, low alcohol, but with a nice flavor and nitro creaminess which made it feel like more.
