554. Spoetzl Brewery – Shiner Hefeweizen

554. Spoetzl Brewery - Shiner Hefeweizen

Today is the first day of SXSW, and although I’ve been there before, I’m not able to go this year. However, I’m missing being there a ton and am taking advantage of their live streams of some of the keynote speakers. In order to truly make it a “SXSW experience at home” I wanted to crack open a Shiner while watching. Fortunately, my good friend @BettyWriter sent me a mixed 6 pack of Shiner beers right before she moved from Austin. To complete the experience, I made some guacamole while enjoying this as well.

Location: Poured into a Stella Artois chalice from the bottle at my home in Bloomington, IL, while watching the SXSW stream live from Austin, TX.

Numbers: 5.6% ABV, 17 IBUs, 6 SRM, 160 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s obviously cloudy from the yeast, and dark golden in color with some orange hues to it. There’s a good amount of carbonation in it, giving it a big, fluffy, bright white head on it, which fell after a minute revealing a light citrusy aroma with hints of breadiness and yeast.

Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel is fairly crisp. The flavor up front is lightly wheaty, bready and yeasty, and it continues through the middle. Some light lemon-orange citrusy flavors also come in during the middle as well. It finishes with only a hint of citrus bitterness with more citrus flavors than yeasty breadiness, and the citrus flavors last briefly in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This is a lighter beer with summer-like bready and citrusy flavors. This would easily go with a ligh fish dish, bringing some additional flavor to it, or as a complement to a summer salad with something like mandarin oranges.

Overall Impression: There’s something nostalgic for me about enjoying a Shiner beer while watching what’s going on at SXSW.  There’s something about the light, lager-like crispness that remains consistent in Shiner beers, that takes me back to being in Texas that I enjoy. Overall, it had some good bready and citrusy flavors that would be great on a hot day, and I hope to enjoy another one of this next year at SXSW in Austin.

My Rating: ★★★☆☆
