341. Samuel Adams – Latitude 48 IPA

Sam Adams Latitude 48 IPAIt’s a relaxing evening, and I reached into the beer fridge to grab something new. I bought this a couple weeks ago as part of the Sam Adams Latitude 48 Deconstructed 12 pack, which includes this Latitude 48 as well as single hopped versions of the beer. Tonight, I was able to sit down, relax, enjoy this beer, and make a few notes… that is before it was time to put the kids down to bed.

Location: Enjoyed this bottle in my kitchen in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 6% ABV, 14.8° Plato OG, 206 Calories

Ingredients: Malts: Two-row Harrington, Metcalfe, and Copeland pale malts, Caramel 60, and Gambrinus Honey Malt; Hops: Hallertau Mittelfrueh Noble hops, East Kent Goldings, Zeus, Simcoe®, and Ahtanum; Samuel Adams ale yeast

Appearance & Aroma: It was clear and had a rusty-copper color with plenty of carbonation. There was a thick, creamy head, which fell somewhat slowly. The aroma was caramel malty with quite a bit of grassy hoppiness.

Taste & Feel: The body was medium and the mouthfeel was crisp from a combination of the carbonation and hoppiness. The middle had a good dose of caramel maltiness with a slight bit of bready, nutty and fruity flavors. It finishes with a big dose of hop bitterness with a complex mix of spicy, resiny, and grassy hop flavors.

Food Pairing: This would go nicely with a burger or brat hot off the grill. The caramel maltiness would add to to the caramelized grill favors and the hoppiness adds an additional flavor which helps to cleanse the palate. I think the caramel maltiness would also go nicely with BBQ as well.

Overall Impression: I’ve begun to think of Sam Adams as one of the mega brewers, so I’m a bit skeptical of their beers. They have found a way to continue to keep their beers pretty flavorful and complex. While it was flavorful and complex, I found the flavors a bit muddy. It’s not a bad beer at all, but I’m looking forward to trying the single hopped versions soon.
