277. Tsingtao Brewery – Tsingtao

Tsingtao

Today is my wife’s birthday, and to celebrate, we went out to Kobe Steakhouse here in town for dinner and a “show.”  It’s usually fairly entertaining, although they’ve got the same gimmicks at all of these types of places.  Since we were celebrating, it was a chance to have a beer, and a unique one that I could add to the list.

Numbers: 4.8% ABV

Appearance & Aroma: It was in the bottle here, but I eventually got a glass.  It was very pale yellow with lots of carbonation in it.  There was a decent white head when I poured it, but it quickly dissipated.  There was a bit of a skunky smell to it, very similar to how a Heineken usually smells in a glass.

Taste & Feel: The body was very light, almost watery, and the mouthfeel was a bit sharp due to the plentiful carbonation in it.  After the initial carbonation bite, there was a bit of a corn-like sweetness.  The finish had a slight bit of a breadiness with a hint of skunky hop bitterness.

Food Pairing: Well, obviously, due to the light body, it goes well with light asian food – rice, chicken, shrimp, etc.  The crispness helps to wash away flavors and savor the next bite of food.

Overall Impression: I’m not sure how long this had been there, but it had an obvious skunkiness like other beers in green bottles typically have.  It was light and crisp, making it very drinkable, and great for my meal.  However, I was a bit disappointed with the skunkiness in the aftertaste.

My Rating: ★½☆☆☆
