225. Mikkeller – Centennial Single Hop IPA Draft

Mikkeller Centennial Single Hop IPAAs I mentioned in my last post, I’m at Fat Jack’s in downtown Bloomington for our ABNormal homebrew club steering meeting.  It’s the first meeting of our new board, and I’m still VP.  The nice thing about meeting at Fat Jack’s is the opportunity to try a few new beers.  They usually have a decent selection, even if it is getting tougher to find beers I haven’t tried yet.  The nice thing about the Mikkeller beers is that it gives you an opportunity to try a single hopped beer, so you can tell what a certain hop actually tastes like.  As I’ve tried more beers like Founder’s Centennial IPA, I’ve learned that I really like the taste of Centennial hops, so trying this one was a no brainer.

It was clear and orange/copper colored, with a creamy, cream-whate head on it.  The aroma was obvious, a mix of piney and floral smells with a hint of citrus.

The mouthfeel was very silky and creamy due to the creamy head, while the body was medium to full.  The flavor surprised me a little at first, as there was a lightly bready caramel flavor up front before the Centennial hop flavor kicked in.  The flavor was piney at first, followed by a stronger citrusy-piney flavor in the finish.  The aftertaste was mostly citrusy with a hint of floral hop flavor.

Since it’s not overly hoppy, it would probably go well with almost any pub fare – burger, pizza, etc.  The piney and citrusy flavors might bring out some of the subtle flavors in the fish in a fish and chips plate.

I think I was expecting something that was a bit of a hop bomb, and instead, it was a well balanced beer that highlighted the flavor of the Centennial hops.  I really enjoy the flavor of these hops and may have to try to brew a Centennial IPA myself.  Overall, it was a well balanced beer with great hop flavor.

My Rating: ★★★½☆
