200. Tin Mill Brewing – Oktoberfest Draft

While visiting several wineries at the Oktoberfest celebration in Hermann, MO, we decided to take a break from the wine and have a beer.  Fortunately, we knew that the Tin Mill Brewery was located right in downtown Hermann.  They had a nice beer garden and band playing out back, so we hung out for a while and had a couple of beers before going back to the wineries.  I also saw this as an opportunity to try another Oktoberfest beer (and avoid having to have one tomorrow, when I’ll likely not feel so good after mixing wine and beer).

As you can see, it was a deep brown color and had a thin head.  There was some nice lacing from it though.  The aroma was malty, but a fairly light maltiness.

The body was light, and the mouthfeel was a bit sharp.  The flavor was slightly malty up front, but then there was a very, very unpleasant metallic flavor.  As I drank it, I picked up on some toasty malt flavors, but the metallic flavors were just too pronounced.

I wouldn’t recommend drinking this beer, let along pairing it with a food.  I noticed some nice malty and toasty flavors hidden behind the metallic flavors, but it became almost undrinkable after a few sips.  I’m not sure what was wrong with this beer, but my friend and I both noticed the terrible metallic flavor.  Perhaps they prepared for the huge Oktoberfest crowd and this beer had been sitting around in a keg for quite some time.  If you happen to be in Hermann when it’s not so busy, let me know, otherwise I cannot recommend anyone try this beer.
