162. St. Louis Brewery / Schlafly – Octoberfest Draft

We were at the Schlafly Tap Room for dinner and a few beers.  After a bad experience with their India Brown Ale, I still had a craving for a nice malty beer, so I thought I’d give their most recent selection a try – the Octoberfest.

It was clear and copper/light brown in color with a thin creamy head which left some nice lacing.  The aroma was malty with a little bit of fruitiness also noticeable.

The body was light and crisp, and it was fairly smooth with just a little bit of carbonation.  There was a nice light malt flavor up front giving way to a caramel-like finish and aftertaste.  There was a little bit of hop bitterness detectable in the finish, but it was primarily malty.

It went very nicely with the pretzels, but also with my turkey burger.  Actually, it might have been even better with a beef or bison burger as the malt and caramel flavors would have stood up to a more robust meal.

I thought this was a good beer, which would be very nice on the deck on a fall evening.  The drinkability was fairly nice, althought I think the maltiness might get to me after a few of these.  Overall, this is a beer I’ll likely have again and look forward to drinking one of these on a football Saturday while tailgating.
