62. St. Louis Brewery Schlafly – American Pale Ale APA Draft

St. Louis Brewery Schlafly American Pale Ale APA with Booches burgersAs I mentioned in my last post, I’m back in my old college town of Columbia, MO for a golf tournament with fraternity brothers.  Our first stop in town was one of our favorite burger joints from when we lived there – Booches.  Their burgers were named one of the top ten burgers in America by USA Today in 2000.  Despite being small burgers – I ordered 4 with my beer – they are incredibly tasty.  If you’re passing through town, you must to stop there for burgers.

The burgers are so good, I almost hate to take a drink while eating them, so I needed a beer with plenty of flavor to match.  My St. Louis friend recommended the recently released Schlafly APA they had on draft.

When it arrived, it was a nice orange color and had a creamy head which was already causing some laticing on the glass.  The aroma was a very obvious citrusy hop smell with just a slight hint of malt in the background.

The body was light, but creamy, and it was fairly smooth.  The hop bite was immediately noticeable, but there was some maltiness to match it.  However, the finish and aftertaste was all hops – big citrusy hops.

I’m not sure of the ABV, but it seemed a bit lighter than an IPA, so it seemed to me to be a great hop-lovers session beer.  Overall, the flavor of the beer was a good match for the tasty little Booches burgers, and I’d definitely recommend pairing this beer with burgers, pizza, and other good flavorful, indulgent foods.  I did pick up a couple of these in the bottle while visiting, so I’m looking forward to those as well.
